Usage

1. How do you use the service?

Using the GPS-SOS service is quite simple and requires the subscriber to use their unique code, provided by Control Center GPS-SOS, then typing it into the Web portal (www.gps-sos.com) to access the current location of the vehicle or watercraft. At this point in the exact location will be identified on the map within the browser.


2. What is the accuracy of the maps?

The Web based maps of Europe are provided to a scale of 1:3.600.000 (city level detail) while the maps used in the Control Center GPS-SOS provide detailed down to the street level. By the beginning of 2005 the street level detail will also be available for the Web based tracking.


3. Where does the GPS-SOS system work?

The GPS-SOS service works throughout the world were a GSM signal is present. GSM Coverage information can be found and confirmed by going to the following Website: http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/index.shtml. During travel to areas not covered by a GSM signal the GPS-SOS unit (series Rapal RN600) records and saves (for up to one year) the unit’s location information and once a GSM signal is found the saved information is transmitted to the Control Center GPS-SOS.


4. How is the GPS-SOS unit installed in the vehicle or watercraft?

The GPS-SOS unit is installed on a secret location known only to the authorized installation technician. Our installation professionals are contractually obligated to ensure that no information on the location of the GPS-SOS unit is revealed to anyone including the owner. This ensures the security of the vehicle as well as the owner. The unit is installed in such a manner that it is hidden and does not interfere with any other mechanical devices.


5. Is the information gathered by the GPS-SOS service secure and who has access to the information?

We have taken great steps to ensure the privacy and confidentiality of your information and do not disclose any information unless required as part of our service. Otherwise information is not released without your prior written consent.

We also have safeguards in place to ensure your information is kept confidential and only those required to see information pertaining to your files have that access. Our security measures include software and hardware, which is updated/enhanced regularly to keep up with any new potential threats.

Security information:

The GPS-SOS service works off server system in Control Center GPS-SOS that is used to gather location data and an additional server system on the Web. Location information is transmitted from the GPS-SOS unit via GSM to the Control Center GPS-SOS and stored on a server system. Only then the location data is mirrored on a Web server system, which allows location viewing on the Web portal. The system has been set up in such a way so that there is no direct access to the server system in Control Center GPS-SOS, which maximizes security. Software and hardware security measures are also in place to guard against any potential attempts to access to the server system.

Security access for viewing of information:

Indeed GPS-SOS service works based on your unique security code, which allows you an authorized access to your information in the form of location tracking. Only those parties that have the code can then identify your location so it is important that your unique security code is kept secret and shared with only those that need or might need access to your vehicle/watercraft location.


6. Can the device be moved from one vehicle/watercraft to another?

Moving the device can only be done by an authorized technician as the location is secret but also to ensure the proper installation. Prior to moving a device a “Task Form / Request for Connection” should be completed at the Authorized Installation Center GPS-SOS which will then be sent to Control Center GPS-SOS. Any alterations to the installation by unauthorized personnel will not guarantee that the service will continue to function.


7. What flexibility is available to the subscriber with respect to GPS-SOS service?

The subscriber may order specific instructions with respect to the monitoring of their vehicle/watercraft during times or when the vehicle may not be used such as the winter months.


8. How secure is my information?

Ensuring the security of your information is a top priority for us. Your information is stored on separate server systems for storage and viewing to ensure higher levels of security. We use encryption methods to secure your data and operationally only provide access to those authorized or required to view your information. In addition, we also ensure that off-site backups are kept in the event of a system's disruption or failure. However, since we operate a main and backup server systems the likelihood of this event occurring is minimal.


9. How long is information stored in the GPS-SOS service?

Your information is saved for three months unless alternate arrangements are made in advance.


10. Is there any harmful radiation given off by the device that may affect my health?

The GPS-SOS units (Rapal RN600 series) has been designed and built to meet international standards with respect to radiation as set out by TÜV GmBH.


11. What happens in the event of the unauthorized use of our vehicle/watercraft?

If your vehicle/watercraft is used without your authorization or permission you should contact the police along with the Control Center GPS-SOS so that the immediate location of the vehicle/watercraft can be determined and conveyed to the appropriate parties.

If you are using the Rapal RN600 REI unit (Remote Engine Immobilizer) the Control Center GPS-SOS can remotely disable or kill the motor of the vehicle temporarily until it can be retrieved or located. This is done automatically after immobilizing request when a vehicle is parked or in another safe location.


12. Are there any additional alarms that can be added to the vehicle/watercraft?

If your alarm system has a standard input/output control mechanism it can be connected to the GPS-SOS unit (series Rapal RN 600) by an authorized service personnel.

13. What are the steps required to be connected to the GPS-SOS service?

What documentation is required for the acceptance of the GPS-SOS service?

The Authorized Customer Center GPS-SOS completes the “Subscription form for the GPS-SOS service” which is then sent either via fax or electronic mail for acceptance (info@rapal.si).


15. What is the procedure for setting up the GPS-SOS service if for example the watercraft is located in Monaco or another location?

Where a subscriber has their watercraft outside of domicile country they are advised to acquire the services of a local GSM operator in the area where there craft will be located ensuring the operator has good roaming privileges and international partnerships to help minimize GSM charges. Coverage information can be found at http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/index.shtml. In this case GSM provider Monaco Telekom would be proper selection.

After selecting a GSM provider an active SIM card (not prepaid variety) should be sent to the Control Center GPS-SOS (RAPAL d.o.o., Celovska 280, SI-1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia, Europe) where the system setup takes place. The GPS-SOS unit will be send to the Authorized Installation Center GPS-SOS which will installation the GPS-SOS unit in the vehicle/watercraft including remote locations subject to prior agreement on these arrangements.


16. What type of SIM card is required?

A standard GSM SIM card (not prepaid variety) provided by your GSM providers is required for each vehicle/watercraft. You should ensure that your provider offers international coverage including extensive roaming privileges if you will be traveling. 18. Are GSM charges included in the monthly GPS-SOS subscription?

Monthly charges for data transfer using the GSM system are paid for by the subscriber to the GSM provider. The monthly charges will vary based on the frequency information is transmitted to the GPS-SOS service and the vehicles actual location. The GPS-SOS unit transmits information via the GSM signal between one minute to 60 minutes with the frequency being determined based the contract or other arrangements.


19. What are typical monthly costs for the GSM coverage?

The monthly GSM charges range from €10 to €30 depending on the GSM operator and the vehicle/watercraft location including roaming or international charges.


20. What are the monthly charges for the GPS-SOS service?

There are two components to the monthly charges for the GPS-SOS service consisting of the GPS-SOS Monthly Service Charges and GSM charges for transmission of information to the GPS_SOS Control Center.

The first set of charges includes access to the GPS-SOS portal. Charges for this are part of your monthly contract and your agreement.

The second set of charges is the GSM coverage provided to allow information about vehicle to be transmitted to the GPS-SOS Control Center. These charges are based on the type of contract signed with your GSM provider.

The vehicle/watercraft location is accurate within 10 meters, which can vary based on signal strength of the GPS satellites used in positioning your vehicle/watercraft. On occasion accuracy may vary due to signal strength, interference, weather or other obstructions.


22. What is the GPS signal coverage throughout the world?

GPS signal coverage can be found throughout the world as satellites are positioned to ensure global coverage.


23. What costs are associated with using the GPS system or Satellites?

The use of the GPS satellites and signals are free.

25. What if a GSM signal is not present for a period of time or coverage gaps exist where I may be traveling?

The system is constantly monitoring your location and in the event that a GSM signal is not present this information will be saved to the GPS-SOS unit until you re-enter a coverage area. At that time the stored information will be transmitted to the Control Center GPS-SOS via the local GSM provider and stored on the main system.
